Travel and Tourism City & Guilds Level 1 Diploma at Bedford College

Course description

This course will introduce you to the skills and knowledge required for a career in the travel and tourism industry. You will learn about customer relations, UK geography and the UK travel and tourism industry, whilst also developing communication skills with a range of customers. The course will give you a good insight into the travel and tourism industry and will provide you with the opportunity to progress further, either through continuing with education or seeking employment.

Course content

During the course you will learn how different organisations in the travel industry operate, including travel agents, tour operators, visitor attractions and airlines.

  • UK tourism industry
  • Accessible travel and tourism

  • UK travel and tourism destinations
  • Planning itineraries
  • Planning for and taking part in a visit
  • Providing information on a tourist destination
  • Recommending holidays to suit customer needs

 

During the course you will have the opportunity to take part in various trips across the UK to help you complete elements of your coursework. In previous years we have visited major London attractions such as the London Eye and London Dungeon along with Drayton Manor and Woburn Safari Park.

Entry requirements

To begin this course you will need a genuine interest in travel and tourism. Some evidence of studying at GCSE level or successful completion of an entry level qualification will be an advantage. Entry will also be subject to a successful interview.

Assessment

You will be assessed through a combination of practical and written assignments. There will also be multiple choice and short answer tests, which will be taken online. All assessments on the course will be externally set and verified by City & Guilds.

Financial information

This course could be free! You will be eligible if you are aged 19-24 on the 31st August of the year you are starting your course and are actively seeking employment and in receipt of a means tested benefit (such as job seekers, housing benefit, council tax benefit). Please note you will need to be able to produce evidence of the benefit in your name when you come to enrol.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of this course you can progress on to the Travel & Tourism Level 2 Diploma. You can also seek employment in the travel and tourism industry as a trainee or apprentice at a travel agency, tour operator or visitor attraction.

Further information

There will be an additional £150 fee attached to this course to cover the cost of trips – this will be payable on enrolment; further details will be given at interview. You will be required to wear a uniform a minimum of 1 day a week. ID badges must also be worn at all times. If you are aged 16-18, tuition fees, exam fees and College membership are free. However, there are additional costs associated with some courses. For example, you may be required to purchase specialist uniforms, equipment or books. You will be required to provide your own pens, paper and folders.
