Applied Double Science A Level at Ivybridge Community College

Course description

Double Award Applied Science takes up the time of TWO option columns. In Year 12, you will study 6 units to complete a Double AS Award. In Year 13, you will study a further 6 units to complete a Double A2 Award. It is possible to study this subject as a Single Award using just one option column.

Applied Science is an excellent complementary course to study alongside several AS/A Level courses.

The Year 12 modules:
Science At Work
Analysis at Work
Monitoring the activity of the human body

Then 2 of the 3 units
Chemicals for a purpose
Forensic science
The Physics of Sport, and
Cells and molecules exam

The Year 13 modules that are compulsory are:

Sampling, testing and processing


Working Waves


Carrying out a Scientific Investigation and 3 of the following 4 options:


Synthesising Organic Chemicals

Ecology, and managing the environment.

Electrons in Action

Applications of Biotechnology

Entry requirements

In order to be considered for an Advanced Subsidiary Course, which leads to a full Advanced Level, students will be expected to have gained an absolute minimum of five GCSE grades at C or above in Mathematics and English, with a minimum of B grades in their chosen subjects having been studied at a higher tier. Students achieving a C grade at GCSE in their chosen subject may be accepted only by negotiation and agreement with the Team Leader for that subject.
