Business Studies BTEC National Diploma at The Heathland School

Course description

This 2 year advanced qualification provides the opportunity for you to develop a wide range of business knowledge and skills. Your studies will cover a wide range of topics relating to businesses such as Customer Relations, Accounting and Marketing.  The optional units below are a selection of units that may be studied.The course content and assessment may be subject to change.

Course content

Mandatory units

Unit 1:  Exploring business;
Unit 2:  Developing a marketing campaign;
Unit 3 : Personal and business finance;
Unit 4:  Managing an event;
Unit 5:  International business;
Unit 6:  Principles of management;
Unit 7:  Business decision making.

Optional units

Unit 8:   Recruitment and selection process;
Unit 9:   Team building in business;
Unit 16: Visual merchandising;
Unit 18: Creative promotion;
Unit 19:  Pitching for a new business;
Unit 24:  Employment law;
Unit 29:  Customer service in retail.

Entry requirements

Students must attain at least 4 A*-C grades with at least D grades in English Language and Mathematics and a total point score of 34+ in the student’s best 8 subjects.


A significant amount of the course is based on portfolio evidence (coursework), with some external assessed units.

Future opportunities

The qualification allows for a number of progression routes:-

  • Higher Education – e.g. a degree in business related subjects and HNDs.
  • Employment – in various business sectors
  • Related qualifications in the National Qualifications – e.g. Applied Business and ICT Level 4 qualifications.

The course is supported with visits to businesses  in the local  Hounslow and Southall area. Students examine marketing campaigns of well known businesses  and visit  businesses such British Airways and Harry Potter Studios. In the summer term students have an opportunity to participate in the Kickstart programme where students are invited to attend workshops to problem solve at Businesses such as SKY, Metro Bank, Discovery, the NHS to name but a few. In addition students are provided with presentations and information about career opportunities.

In the past, students at the school have been extremely successful in obtaining places at prestigious universities to study courses of their choice such as Law, Business, Geography, Surveying and Computer Science.
