Physics AS/A2 Level at Chichester High Schools Sixth Form

Course description

There are 8 compulsory topics:

1. Measurements and their errors

2. Particles and radiation

3. Waves

4. Mechanics and materials

5. Electricity

6. Further mechanics and thermal physics

7. Fields and their consequences

8. Nuclear physics

In addition,one of the following option topics must be studied

• Astrophysics

• Medical physics

• Engineering physics

• Turning points in physics

• Electronics

There is no centre-marked coursework (such as the previous ISAs). Instead there is a list of 12 compulsory practical experiments which are carried out as part of the topics listed above. Knowledge and skills gained in these experiments are assessed in an exam paper at the end of the course.

5 GCSEs at grade C or above with a grade B in Physics and Maths or BB in Double Science (higher paper only)

Assessment

paper 1:2 hour paper

85 marks (60 marks in long and short answer questions, 25 multiple choice)

Based on topics 1 to 5 and 6.1 (periodic motion)

34% of final grade

paper 2:2 hour paper

85 marks (60 marks in long and short answerquestions, 25 multiple choice)

Based on topics 6.2 (thermal physics), 7, 8 and links to topics 1 to 6.1

34% of final grade

paper 3:2 hour paper

SectionA: 45 marks in long and short answer questions on practical experiments and data analysis

Section B: 35 marks in long and short answer questions on optional topic

32% of final grade

Practical Skill Endorsement 

These have no impact on the final grade awarded for the A level. However, the practical skill endorsement will be reported with the results. The student’s practical skills are assessed and monitored over the whole course against a set of criteria by the teacher. If all of the criteria are met by the end of the course, the teacher issues the practical skill endorsement.
