Dance at Wickersley School and Sports College

Course description

This subject will be offered in Option Block B

The A Level Dance course provides students with essential transferable skills to ensure that they are prepared for further study or employment in the Dance or Performing Arts industry.  This qualification encourages students to develop their creative and intellectual capacity, alongside transferable skills such as team working, communication and problem solving.  All of these are sought after skills by higher education and employers and will help them out in the workplace whatever their choice of career.

Course content

Students will develop and articulate theoretical knowledge, understanding and experience of:

  • Technical and performance skills
  • The process and art of choreography
  • The interrelationship between the creation, presentation and appreciation of dance
  • The development of dance placed within an artistic and cultural context
  • Professional dance works and the significance of these works
  • Subject specific terminology and its use.

This will be achieved by students completing both practical and theory elements.  In practical lessons, students will develop skills to enable them to perform dance in a solo and in a group and they will be required to create an original piece of group choreography in response to an externally set task.  In the theory aspect of the course, students will study Rambert Dance Company and The Independent Contemporary Dance Scene in Britain 2000-current; they will consider the development of these study areas, key practitioners and set professional works.
