English Language and Literature AS and A Level at Portsmouth College

Course description

English Language & Literature is for students who enjoy reading acclaimed literature and who are keen to learn more about how writers create their imaginative worlds.  It is also for students interested in developing their own creative writing skills and who have a fascination with how characters, description and plot are created and conveyed.

Course content

In this wide-ranging course there will be opportunities to study novels, plays and poems as well as a variety of non-fiction texts, with the aim of gaining a deeper understanding of how the use of language influences the world around us.  You will also explore a number of theories, themes and concepts relating to the development of language and its application in texts.  The course will appeal to students who like to explore the many styles of speech and writing and how these are used in different contexts.

Entry requirements

You would normally be expected to have at least five GCSEs at grades A*-C (including English Language), some at grade B or above. Level 2 BTEC or OCR National qualifications (at Merit grade or higher) would be a useful addition but cannot be used instead of the basic GCSE requirement.

There will be three examinations and one element of coursework (the AS level has no course work).

Future opportunities

Because this course is already a combined one, it cannot be taken with either of the other two English A levels.
