Business BTEC level 3 Extended Certificate at Carnforth High School

Course description

The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Business is about the real working world and people’s roles in it, so it is immediately relevant to everyone. It is an excellent preparation for the workplace and will build up knowledge and understanding of different types of businesses and of work related skills through research, interviews and practical tasks. The course develops the very skills that employers look for in their employees and they are also life skills that will be used everyday. It enables you to strengthen your ability to communicate effectively in various ways, to work independently and as part of a team, to develop leadership skills and to tackle problems and come up with achievable solutions.

Course content

Unit 1—Exploring Business

  • Innovation and Enterprise

Students will learn about the types of businesses and what makes them successful. They will develop an understanding of how a business is organised, whilst also considering all the factors that influence business operations.

Unit 2—Developing a Marketing Campaign
  • Marketing Principles
  • Data Analysis

Students will learn about how businesses market their products. They will develop an understanding of how to source data which can influence a marketing campaign, whilst also critically analysing marketing campaigns that are already in existence.

Unit 3—Personal and Business Finance
  • Financial Principles
  • Accounting Processes
  • Data Analysis

Students will learn about business and personal finance principles and apply their knowledge to real life business and personal scenarios. They will also learn how to analyse and interpret financial data and demonstrate how it can be used.

Unit 8—The Recruitment and Selection Process
  • Recruitment Documentation
  • Ethics and Employment Law
  • SWOT analyses

Students will learn how effective recruitment and selection contribute to business success. They will also complete a recruitment activity to understand the processes involved in successfully securing future employment.

Entry requirements

General Entry Requirement:  5 A*-Cs at GCSE including GCSE English and/or Mathematics. 

In addition, a minimum grade C for the vocational subject you are hoping to study.

Assessment

Unit 1—Exploring Business

Students will complete internally assessed coursework assignments. This will count towards 21% of their final BTEC qualification.

Unit 2—Developing a Marketing Campaign

Students will complete a controlled assessment which is marked externally and is worth 70 marks. Learners will be provided with a case study two weeks before the assessment. This will count towards 29% of their final BTEC qualification.

Unit 3—Personal and Business Finance

Students will complete a 2 hour written examination set by Pearson that is worth 100 marks. This will count towards 29% of their final BTEC qualification.

Unit 8—The Recruitment and Selection Process

Students will complete internally assessed coursework assignments. This will count towards 21% of their final BTEC qualification.
