Health and Social Care BTEC level 3 Extended Certificate at Carnforth High School

Course description

Learning and undertaking activities in Health and Social Care will prepare students for many chosen career paths. You will study core, mandatory and specialist units, over the two year course, as well as developing key skills: The course aims to equip learners to become good communicators, present ideas clearly, understand many factors involved in health, recognise differing aspects of the human lifespan, along with a significant understanding of the health and social care values. The skills Health and Social Care contribute to achievement of the curriculum aims for all young people are to become successful learners who are able to demonstrate and evaluate concepts and the many factors that may be involved. Throughout the course, learners will expand their knowledge and this will enable them to develop further their responsibility to become non—judgemental citizens/workforce employees, with moral values, able to make positive contri-butions to community and society. There will be visits to Health and Social Care sectors and guest speakers to enrich the course. We have strong links with employers in this sector including the NHS.

Course content

Unit 1- Human Lifespan Development

Unit 2- Working in Health and Social Care

Unit 3- Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs

Unit 4– Learners will study one of the following optional units
  • Sociological Perspectives
  • Psychological Perspectives
  • Supporting Individuals with Additional Needs
  • Physiological Disorders and their Care

Entry requirements

5 A*-Cs at GCSE including GCSE English and/or Mathematics. 

In addition, a minimum C grade for vocational subjects you are hoping to study


Units 1 and 2 will be externally set and assessed

Units 3 and 4 will be internally set and assessed

Financial information

All students are required to bring equipment to make notes during lessons. Students are expected to take care of their own work and it is recommended that they buy ring binders to store the notes and readings for the course.
