Music *FEES PAYABLE* at Akeley Wood Senior School

Course description

Students will be expected to take on a leading role within the music department, whether leading bands, running a rehearsal or helping with smaller ensembles, this aspect is vital for the development of the pupil and their understanding of performance and rehearsal techniques and will also lead onto students being able to rehearse and conduct a performance of a composition they have written. The course caters for a wide range of musicians. Students are free to choose any instrument(s) and/or voice(s) and perform music in any style. Students can perform from a score, or improvise, as appropriate. The level of performance is expected to correspond to Grade 5 (AS) and Grade 6 (A2) of graded examinations of bodies such as the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, Trinity Guildhall, Rockschool, and the London College of Music. If students perform at a level that exceeds Grade 5, additional credit will be awarded. If students perform at a lower level, marks are scaled accordingly.

Entry requirements

There are many opportunities where the students can perform within school. Our lunchtime concerts are an ideal environment as are our Music in Quiet Places concerts. There are also several main concerts throughout the year where students are invited to perform solos, play in small ensembles as well as performing as part of one of the many larger ensembles on offer.

We encourage the students to take as many opportunities as possible to perform to build on their skills as a performer and to gain confidence. Students will be encouraged to perform and will be required to complete a performance log throughout the course of the academic year. This log will show not only school concerts but also any outside engagements that the pupil has undertaken.

Students will be able to take part in lunchtime concerts held every month atSchool and will also be required to write a brief programme note on the piece they will be performing.
