Creative Media Production (Games Development) Level 3 Extended Diploma at Southport College

Course description

This is a practical, work-related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic work situations, activities & demands.

As well as learning about games design and animation, you develop the general skills you need to start a career in the media industry. This course covers computer graphics skills (2D and 3D); animation (2D and 3D); drawing concept art; computer games design; audio and video editing skills; and understanding the media & games industries.

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma is equivalent to three A-levels which means when you have finished the course you can choose whether to get a job straight away, or go into higher education first.

Entry requirements

• Minimum 5 GCSEs at A*- C including English or Merit in a related Level 2 Diploma and C or above in English
• Good portfolio or samples of work that show storyboarding, digital images, sketches, photographs and design ideas 
• Successful interview 
• Satisfactory reference 


Most units are assessed by a series of assignments, applying theory, concepts and acquired knowledge to realistic scenarios.

Future opportunities

The course is designed to enable you to progress on to university and a career in the industry. On successful completion of the course, you may want to do a degree in an area such as Games Design, Animation or 3D Design. The College has good links with UCLAN’s Games Design course. You will have a nationally recognised qualification that is well-known to employers as well as universities, giving you the option to seek employment within the games or animation industry.
