Health and Social Care Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma at Northumberland College

Course description

This course is suitable for 16-18yrs old candidates who would like progress to further studies in health and social care or work in the health and social care sector and have prior knowledge, qualification and/ or experience of this subject area. It is also suitable for applicants aged 19yrs and over who would like to undertake core learning about Health and Social Care enabling them to access work in the sector without progression to university. All applicants must undertake an interview and apply for DBS clearance to demonstrate that they do not have a criminal background which might prevent them from working with young people or vulnerable adults.

Course content

You will study exciting units including; - anatomy and physiology, - safeguarding adults and children, - psychology and sociology, - managing challenging behaviour - physiological disorders - equality and diversity and - personal and professional development. You will produce a portfolio of assignments and work products which will demonstrate that you are able to apply theory to practice. You will also be required to complete practical placement in health and social care environments.

Entry requirements

You will need to hold a minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade C or above including English or the equivalent in BTEC level 2 qualifications, preferably in Health and Social Care or a related area, at Merit or Distinction grade and appropriate levels of English to support their studies at this level (determined by initial assessment). Learners who wish to progress to University will need to have a GCSE in Maths and English. For Nursing you will also be required to have GCSE Science. You may have the opportunity to complete a GCSE at Northumberland College alongside your main course.


Your progress will be assessed by a range of methods including practical assessments, presentation, observations and written assignments. The course will be graded at a pass, merit or distinction.

Future opportunities

Most students will have the opportunity to progress on to the conversion award completing a second year which will enable them to achieve the BTEC Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care Level 3. After completing the subsidiary diploma course you could also enter employment into the health and social care sector in a range of roles.
