Art: Fine Art at The Joseph Rowntree School
Unit 1: Coursework - We will explore the theme ‘Evolve’ through observational drawing and photography. We will also investigate the work of relevant Artists and diverse cultures, which will prompt our own experimentation using print, digital manipulation, and other materials. This visual work will be organised and presented and used to develop proposals for further work.
Unit 2: Assignment - The work in this unit follows a similar pattern except the starting point is set by the board. The unit is kick started by set activities that lead to more independent work.
Unit 3: Coursework - This unit begins in the summer term with a chance to develop your understanding of drawing. There will also be work on how to express your opinion about Art. In September you will be set a theme to explore. By this stage of the course students are expected to be more independently minded. A very broad starting point is set, for example ‘Revealed and Concealed’ which students will explore and use to generate proposals of their own work.
Unit 4: Assignment - The work in this unit follows a similar pattern except the starting point is set by the board. The unit is kick started by set activities that lead to more independent work.
To be successful at A-Level, students need to achieve an average points score of 38, which is broadly equivalent to 5 GCSE grades A*-C
It is very desirable to have gained GCSE Art and Design Grade C or more.
We do accept students who have not studied the subject before, provided they work satisfactorily through a short probationary period.
