Health and Social Care RSW Diploma Level 1 at Boston College

Course description

This course combines a basic introduction to health and social care with work experience. You will study many areas of health and social care including: health and social care needs, communications with children, job opportunities in health and social care, welcoming visitors, career progression, preparing for work, introduction to healthy eating, personal care in health and social care, working as a part of a group, communicating electronically and plan and participate in an event. 

This course will help you to understand the skills and knowledge needed in health and social care sector.

Course content

You will study the Level 1 BTEC Diploma in Vocational studies and get an opportunity to visit local and regional businesses to observe and gain experience in the industry. Also guest speakers from industry will come and speak to you to enhance your vision. 

You will be encouraged to develop your employability skills including time management, communication skills, research skills and teamwork. 

As a part of the course you will gain a valuable work experience which will be arranged by the College.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry qualifications for this course.


This course is a combination of both practical and theory. You will learn and be assessed by completing either practical or scenario based activities and by writing assignments. These assignment activities will develop your skills from a variety of health and social care areas. 

Some assessments include: functional skills exams, production of a portfolio (written, videoed, audio recorded), case studies, and role play.

Financial information

You may require a DBS.

Future opportunities

The course will give you the equivalent of 4 GCSEs at D-G grade. 

This would give you the opportunity to progress to other courses within the college at level 1 or 2, an apprenticeship or employment.
