Music Performance (BTEC Level 3) at Morecambe Community High School

Course description

This course is for students who perform as musicians and are looking to further their musical studies and experiences in a variety of ways. The BTec Level 3 in Music Performance can be studied for one or two years, leading to one of the following qualifications:

- BTec Level 3 Certificate in Music Performing (1xAS Level Equivalent) OR  BTec Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Performing (1xA Level Equivalent)

Course content

You will study one core unit and two specialist units in each year:

Year 1:

Year 2:

Unit 30: Pop Music in Practice
Unit 12: Improvising Music
Unit 23: Music Performance Techniques

Unit 34: Contemporary Songwriting Techniques
Unit 40: Working and Developing as Musical Ensemble Unit 24: Music Project

You will study one core unit (Music Performance Techniques) and 2 specialist units in each year. All units are marked on a Pass/Merit/Distinction system, with the opportunity for you to resubmit work to improve your marks. You are expected to have your own instrument, and having instrumental lessons are essential.

The course is predominantly practical based, although there are some written assignments that also have to be completed. Students are expected to improve throughout the course through a structure practice routine, which is also monitored closely.

Students completing the course can gain university entry to study music related programmes at degree level. Alternatively, students may wish to progress directly into a career in the music industry such as a professional musician, session musician, recording engineer, or teaching.



Assessment is done in the form of practical and or written assessment. This will be undertaken as the course progresses.
