Public Services Level 1 at Wiltshire College
This one year course is aimed at learners who enjoy keeping physically fit and taking part in sport and outdoor activities. The Level 1 Public Services course is ideal for those looking for a career that involves helping people and serving the community in employment areas such as:
- HM Armed Forces
- Police Community Support Officer
- Fire Service
- Voluntary Sector
- Local Authority
- Voluntary Organisations
During this course, learners will study a range of units including:
- Public Service careers
- Improving health and fitness for entry into the Uniformed Public Service
- Personal skills for the Public Services
- Map reading using Ordinance Survey maps
- Introduction to expedition skills
- Planning and participating in an event
As well as the main programme of study, you will also take appropriate Functional Skills in English and maths.
4 GCSEs at grade E or equivalent.

There are no formal exams for the Level 1 course although candidates will be assessed throughout the year by a variety of theory and practical tasks including written tasks, presentations and observations.
Candidates will also complete functional skills in maths and English alongside their work.
Students are expected to study between timetabled sessions in order to complete course work. It will also be necessary for students to undertake assessment work tasks at home and during free time.
Students are encouraged to undertake enrichment activities and events or complete a personal and social development qualification that will help you grow and prosper as an individual, thereby supporting your progression opportunities into further study, training or employment.
The final qualification will be BTEC Level 1 Diploma in Public Services.
Upon successful completion of the Level 1 course, students will be able to progress onto:
- Level 2 Public Services
- Level 2 Military Preparation
