Advanced Apprenticeship: Hairdressing at Croydon Skills and Enterprise College

Course description

You will gather evidence for the NVQ Level 3 in Hairdressing & Key Skills. Evidence will be gathered in the workplace and you will have regular meetings with an assessor. You will also take part in on and off the job training. This Apprenticeship covers all the basics of hairdressing. As a Hairdressing apprentice, you’ll work as a salon junior, assisting senior staff while training as a junior stylist. Duties are likely to include booking appointments, shampooing, conditioning, drying and styling hair, and mixing and applying hair colouring. You’ll study hairdressing topics such as hair and skin testing, the effects of chemicals on hair and skin, and the principles of hair colour selection – there’s also the option to learn about promoting products, perming, or relaxing different types of hair. Advanced apprentices take their learning a step further by developing their cutting and colouring skills so they can carry out all the latest fashion techniques – and maybe even determine the fashion looks of the future. On this Apprenticeship you’ll spend a lot of time on your feet, and it’s important that you look smart (and have an even better hairstyle). Good communication plays a role, too – you’ll need to understand exactly what your customer wants in order to make them happy.

Entry requirements

4 GCSE's grade C or above in English & Maths plus a diagnostic skills test OR previous NVQ 2 Hairdressing plus diagnostic skills test

Future opportunities

The course offers you a specialist work-based qualification to support a career in hairdressing or to progress onto studying for an NVQ level 4 in Hairdressing or a HND in a related subject such as Business and Administration, which could help you set up your own hair salon. With further training and experience, you could go onto working as a senior hair stylist or with the relevant business knowledge you could also set up your own hairdressing salon. The course is work based which means you can earn and learn at the same time whilst developing the skills, understanding and knowledge that employers in the hair and beauty industries are looking for.
