Course description

Aims

  • To develop creativity and the ability to design and make high quality products
  • To develop an understanding of Product Design from a historical perspective and in current practice
  • To apply knowledge and skills of design production processes to a range of design activities
  • To develop an understanding of industrial practices in manufacturing and the roles of designers
  • Use ICT to enhance design and technology capability

This subject is suitable for any student with a background/interest in product design and the development of new products, model making and CAD design. The course will allow students to continue their studies at University following any Design related degree. It will also give students a broad knowledge of industrial practice, giving real opportunity to those interested in careers in the Design and Manufacturing industry.

Course content

A Level - Students are given the chance to apply skills they have acquired and developed throughout the AS course to design and make a product of their choice. A key feature of this unit is that the students must consider issues related to the environment and sustainability.

Unit 3 - Design and Manufacture

  • Students develop knowledge. Students will develop their knowledge and understanding of a range of modern design and manufacturing processes and contemporary design issues. Students will also develop an awareness of sustainable product design, industrial and commercial technology, systems control and design in context.

Unit 4 – Commercial Design

  • Students are given the opportunity to apply skills they have acquired and developed throughout this course of study. Students design and make a product of their choice to comply with the requirements of a graphic product.

Entry requirements

Attain at least a C grade in English Language/English Literature GCSE or Mathematics GCSE. Technology subject: B or if not studied: Art: B.

Assessment

Unit 3 - Design and Manufacture

2 hr exam - 40% of A level.

Unit 4 – Commercial Design

Coursework – internally marked, externally moderated. 60% of A level.
