Biology AS/A2 Level at Heathfield Community College

Course description

Biology is one of the most popular A Level subjects in the country, attracting students studying a wide range of other subjects. It involves the study of a wide range of exciting topics from molecular biology to the study of ecosystems and from microorganisms to mammoths. Biology is never far from the headlines either……did you know that in Kenya 350 people die from AIDS every day and that in South East Asia the skies are dark with smoke as the last Bornean rainforests are burned to grow oil palms? You will find Biology a very rewarding and challenging course which will develop many of the skills essential for a successful career.

 

Course content

Year 1

Topic 1: Biological molecules

Topic 2: Cells The topics of Enzymes, DNA, cells, osmosis and fighting infection are covered. Assessment Information All assessent is completed in 2 papers, (1hr30min )at the end of the year. 20% of each paper will include practical skills covered during the year, each paper will cover topics from 1 to 4. Each paper is 50% of AS total.

Topic 3: Organisms exchange substances with their environment

Topic 4: genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms The topics of exchange surfaces (digestion, lungs), circulation heart, protein synthesis, genetic diversity and biodiversity, are covered.

Assessment Information All assessent is completed in 2, 1hr30min papers at the end of the year. 20% of each paper will include practical skills covered during the year, each paper will cover topics from 1 to 4.

Year 2

Topic 5: Energy transfers in and between organisms &

Topic 6: Organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments The topics of photosynthesis, respiration, energy and ecosystems, nerves and homeostasis are covered.

Assessment Information Paper 1 (2hours) = any content from Topics 1 to 4 (AS) including practical skills (20%) 35% of total A level. Paper 2 (2hours) = any content from Topics 5 to 8 (A2) including practical skills (20%) 35% of total A level. Paper 3 (2hours) = any content from Topics 1 to 8 (AS & A2) including practical skills (20%) 30% of total A level.

Topic 7: Gentics, populations, evolution and ecosystems

Topic 8: The control of gene expression. The topics of inheritance, populations and evolution, populations in ecosystems, gene expression and DNA technology are covered.

Assessment Information Paper 1 (2hours) = any content from Topics 1 to 4 (AS) including practical skills (20%) 35% of total A level. Paper 2 (2hours) = any content from Topics 5 to 8 (A2) including practical skills (20%) 35% of total A level. Paper 3 (2hours) = any content from Topics 1 to 8 (AS & A2) including practical skills (20%) 30% of total A level.

A* - B in GCSE Core and Additional Science or in 2 Triple Sciences
