Edexcel A Level Mathematics

 

Course content

The course continues to build on all areas of mathematics covered in GCSE. There is a large focus on algebra skills as well as an increased emphasis on problem solving.

Topics covered include: proof, algebra and functions, coordinate geometry in the (x, y) plane, sequences and series, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms, differentiation, integration, numerical methods and vectors

In addition to the pure topics, there are sections of the course covering applied mathematics:

Statistics

  • Statistical sampling  
  • Data presentation and interpretation
  • Probability
  • Statistical distributions
  • Statistical hypothesis testing

Mechanics

  • Quantities and units in mechanics
  • Kinematics
  • Forces and Newton’s laws
  • Moments

 

Entry requirements

A minimum of five Grade 9 - 4 / A*-C at GCSE. This MUST include at least a Grade 4 / Grade C in English Language

Grade 6 / B in Mathematics

Future opportunities

Mathematics is well-respected by many employers and is an excellent subject for entry into higher education.

Mathematics combines well with a range of A Level courses, particularly Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Economics. It also complements the study of Product Design and Psychology.

Students that have studied mathematics are in a fortunate position of having a fantastic choice of career. This course leads directly into the sciences, engineering, computer sciences and, of course, mathematics degrees.
