Music A Level at Westcliff High School for Girls
Building on from skills acquired at KS3 and KS4 students will develop their practical musicianship, listening and analysis of music through AS and into the A2 course by completing 3 overarching units.
UNIT 1 (AS – 30%) and UNIT 4 (A2): PERFORMING MUSIC Students perform as soloists and/or as part of an ensemble. Any instrument(s) and/or voice(s) are acceptable as part of assessed performances (5-6 minute at AS and 12– 15 minutes at A2). Notated and/or improvised performances may be submitted but the expected standard is equivalent to Grade 5 (AS) and Grade 6 (A2).
UNIT 2 (AS – 30%) and UNIT 5 (A2): COMPOSING MUSIC Students develop their composition skills and write a three-minute piece in response to a chosen brief as released by Edexcel. Students also write a CD sleeve note to describe aspects of their final composition and explain how other pieces of music have influenced it. At A2 the choice of composition or technical studies is made.
UNIT 3 (AS – 40%) and UNIT 6 (A2): DEVELOPING MUSICAL UNDERSTANDING Set works from the anthology provide the focus for the written examination.
Grade B at GCSE Music is expected
Grade 5 on an instrument is highly desirable
Assessment: Internally marked and externally moderated by Edexcel.
Assessment: One 2 hour exam for AS; One 2 hour exam for A2
Past students have gone on to study music at Music Conservatoires and top universities including Oxford and Cambridge.
