Plumbing Apprenticeship (Level 2 Intermediate and Level 3 Advanced) at Blackburn College

Course description

The Plumbing Apprenticeship offers a qualification that will equip you with the skills and knowledge you need when working in a job role which focuses on plumbing. You will be working in a variety of environments where your duties could encompass many areas of plumbing. You need to be familiar with everything from domestic boilers to advanced welding techniques to computerised control systems and from installing sanitation systems and servicing boilers to laying underground drainage pipes, plumbers work for the construction industry as well as for commercial and domestic clients. To undertake an Apprenticeship in Plumbing you must be committed, have a keen interest in the trade and have the determination and motivation to succeed.

Course content

Selection of units from the NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Plumbing Intermediate Apprenticeship:

  • Install non-complex plumbing systems and components
  • Maintain a safe working environment when undertaking plumbing work activities.
  • Maintain non-complex plumbing systems and components

Selection of Units from the NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Plumbing and Domestic Heating Advanced Apprenticeship (Gas, Fire, Water and Central Heating Appliances):

  • Domestic hot water, cold water, central heating and sanitation systems
  • Domestic plumbing and heating systems, components and gas-fired warm air appliances
  • Domestic plumbing and heating systems, components and gas-fired water and central heating appliances

Other pathways are available to suit the employers' requirements including the 'Environmental pathway'.

Entry requirements

There are no specific entry requirements to study an Apprenticeship at Blackburn College. You will have an initial assessment when you come in for an interview, and this will show the level of English and maths qualifications, known as functional skills, that you will study alongside your apprenticeship.

Blackburn College will work with applicants to help find a suitable employer where possible. However we always advise anyone looking to undertake an apprenticeship to be actively seeking employment for themselves too.

Assessment

You will be assessed in one or more of the following ways:

  • Course work
  • Exams
  • Oral questioning
  • Portfolio of evidence
  • Practical demonstration/assignment
  • Practical examination
  • Written examination

Future opportunities

On successful completion of the Intermediate Level 2 Apprenticeship in plumbing, an Apprentice will have the skills, knowledge and qualifications to progress onto a relevant Level 3 qualifications and/or Advanced Level Apprenticeship in Domestic Plumbing and Heating. On completion of the Advanced Apprenticeship in Plumbing you could progress on to relevant Level 4/5 qualifications e.g. Building Services Engineering Technology, Project Management, Environmental Technologies or Foundation Degree in Engineering. Job progression could include a career with further training into such roles as Technician, Designer Estimator, Project Manager, Site/Workshop Supervisor/Manager, Chartered Engineer, Sales Engineer or Commercial Manager.
