Chemistry A-Level at The Coleshill School

Course description

Students who have been successful in and enjoyed GCSE Science. Students should have a high level of analytical ability and an interest in learning through practical work and experiments.

Many scientific courses at University are readily accessible such as Medicine, Dentistry, Chemical Engineering and Zoology. There are also many non-scientific courses e.g. Accountancy, Law, Business Management.

Course content

Unit 1 Atoms, Bonds and Groups AS Level 30% A Level 15%

Unit 2 Chains, Energy and Resources. AS Level 50% A Level 25% Unit 3 Investigative and Practical Skills. Assessment in the classroom. AS Level 20% A Level 10%

Unit 4 Rings, Polymers and Analysis. A Level 15%

Unit 5 Equilibria, Energetics and Elements. A Level 25% Unit 6 Investigative and Practical Skills. Assessment in the classroom. A Level 10%

Entry requirements

Entry requirements to A Level Courses are 5 A* to C grades at GCSE including English and Maths.

Subject Specific

Grade B at Science GCSE is essential, preferably Chemistry

Assessment

AS - One 60 minute examination for Unit 1 and 105 minute paper for Unit 2. Then a practical assessment in the classroom for Unit 3.

A2 - One 60 minute examination for Unit 4 and 105 minute paper for Unit 5. Then practical assessment in the classroom for Unit 6.
