Hair and Beauty - Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical and Media Make-up at Wakefield College
This programme offers an exciting opportunity to develop your skills in make-up artistry with a variety of modules, that cover areas that are relevant across the industry. Maths and English are key elements of any full-time programme of study in College. If you do not already have a GCSE at grade A*-C (or new grade 9-4) in these subjects, you will need to attend sessions allocated on your timetable. These are varied and designed to cater for all ability levels. You will receive advice and guidance regarding the correct level for you.
Skills in Maths and English will support your full-time course, assisting you with assignment writing, research, job applications, presentations, managing your own finances and interpretation of data, to mention just a few. They will also help you in the future. Most employers are looking for ability in these areas and the majority of university courses require you to have Maths and English GCSEs at A*-C (or new grade 9-4). This is why the development of Maths and English is so important, whatever your field of study.
How you will learn
There is a period of skill training for the practical areas, observation of demonstration followed by an opportunity to practise these skills. Taught theory lessons consist of group discussions, lectures and subject research. You will be required to carry out work experience in a salon for 1 day per week.
4 GCSEs at A*-C (new grade 9-4) including English and Maths
4 GCSEs at A*-C (new grade 9-4)
Level 2 Functional Skills in either English or Maths, and
Grade D (new grade 3) or Level 1 Functional Skills in the other
Level 2 Beauty Therapy or Level 2 Hairdressing
You will need to produce a portfolio. You will have graded practical assessments which will make up 50% of your course, external examinations which will make up 30% and a graded synoptic final practical assessment which will make up the remaining 20% of the course. You will also be required to produce a portfolio of evidence.
Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18 years old. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, residentials etc which are payable by all students.
Any student entered/registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and then withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any resit examination will incur a cost.

You may wish to progress into Level 4 salon management or other areas within beauty therapy, sports therapy or hairdressing industries, or into Higher Education within similar fields.
This qualification may lead directly into employment as a make-up artist working in health care (camouflage make-up), retail or beauty consultancy, beauty salons, or the fashion, photographic or media sectors.
