Hair & Beauty Skills Diploma Level 2 (VRQ) at St Helens College

Course description

This course is designed to introduce you to a wide range of skills that will specifically prepare you for the role of a hairdressing and beauty therapy apprentice within the hair and beauty sector.

Course content

During this course, you will cover the following units:

  • Create an image based on a theme
  • Follow health and safety practice in the salon
  • Basic plaiting and twisting hair
  • Colour hair using semi-permanent colour
  • Basic clipper cutting techniques for men's hair
  • Basic cutting techniques for women's hair
  • Blow dry and finish hair
  • Basic winding techniques
  • Shampoo and treat hair
  • Client and customer skills
  • Create and maintain a retail display area in the salon
  • Promote yourself and prepare for a job interview
  • Promote and sell products and services to clients

Through the mandatory unit, 'Create an image based on a theme', you will learn how to create a mood board detailing all of your ideas for the full look before creating it on a client including hair, make-up and nails, based on your chosen theme. By doing this, you will gain the skills needed to communicate your ideas and will be able to understand why creating a mood board is an important part of developing your overall look.

In addition to these units, you will also have the opportunity to select from the following options:

  • Face painting
  • Basic nail art
  • Eyebrow shaping
  • Basic skincare
  • Basic photographic make-up
  • Basic manicure and pedicure

These optional units will also provide an insight into the hair and beauty industry, relevant hair and beauty products, health and safety, client and customer skills, promoting and selling products and services, promoting yourself, designing retail display areas and preparing for a job interview.

Entry requirements

You will need a level 1 hairdressing qualification and a grade E or above in maths and English.

English and maths forms an important part of your future, ensuring you achieve the best success in your chosen career. But don't worry, if you haven't got the desired grades, we will still have a course available for you.

Assessment

An assessment will take place at the end of the course which will combine what you have learned from different parts of the course. Practice assessments will take place throughout the year.

You are also required to build a portfolio of evidence to support what has been carried out over the period of your course.

Financial information

f you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2016), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. 

Future opportunities

This qualification will prepare you for an apprenticeship in hairdressing or beauty therapy as a hairdressing or beauty therapy apprentice, in the hair and beauty sector.

This qualification will prepare you to progress to the next level of vocational learning at level 2, specifically you will be able to undertake:

  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing (QCF)
  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Barbering (QCF)
  • Level 2 Diploma in Women's Hairdressing (QCF)
  • Level 2 Diploma in Barbering (QCF)

Further information

As part of this programme you are required to wear a uniform (tunic), which will be worn with black trousers or a skirt and a full black shoe. There is also a kit required to complete your assessments which can be purchased from a recommended supplier. You may be eligible for a bursary to cover these costs.
