AS Level: Art and Design (Graphics) at King Edward VII Science and Sport College, Coalville
The aims of the course are to enable you to creatively explore and develop your interest in Graphic Design. You will be actively encouraged to work independently and originally to develop your own graphic style and visuals for presentation of your work. The course inspires you to think about the way society communicates through graphics, and how we can influence this through considered design solutions. You can develop design ideas for magazine covers, posters, CD and DVD covers, business cards and advertisements, packaging for all sorts of products—clothing, perfume, toys, music or food. It will give you the opportunity to experiment with many types of media, ranging from CAD/CAM routers to more traditional design techniques.
5 GCSE grades A*-C, including a grade C in a design subject
Unit 1 Coursework Portfolio = 50% of your final AS Grade (25% of A level grade)
Unit 2 Terminal Examination = 50% of your final AS Grade (25% of A level grade)
You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses such as History of Art or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Art and Design, which could lead onto higher education in areas of art and design, photography, architecture or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to art and design such as an Architect, Interior Designer, Artist or fashion designer. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will encourage you to explore your creative mind and help you develop the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
