Mathematics A Level at Matravers School

Course description

There are good economic reasons for studying Maths. A recent report by the Centre for Economic Performance made front page news in the Times Educational Supplement. The report said that young people with A Level Maths earn 10 % more than those without the qualification. Through Mathematics you develop the ability to think in abstract and the ability to reason and question logically. You will learn to adopt a curious and questioning approach and become a more effective thinker. If you want to go on to study at University then A Level Mathematics will open more doors than any other subject.

Course content

Unit 1 – D1 Decision Maths Algorithms; Algorithms on Graphs; The Route Inspection Problem; Critical Path Analysis; Linear Programming; Matchings.

Unit 2 – C1 Core Maths Algebra and Functions; Co-ordinate Geometry; Arithmetic Series; Differentiation and integration.

Unit 3 – C2 Core Maths Algebra and Functions; Co-ordinate Geometry of Circle; Geometric Series; Trigonometry; Exponentials and Logarithms.

Unit 4 – C3 Core Maths Algebra and Functions; Trigonometry; Identities; Differentiation/Integration of More Complex Functions; Numerical Methods.

Unit 5 – C4 Core Maths Partial Fractions; Parametric Equations; Exponential Growth and Decay; Integration by Parts; Vectors.

Unit 6 – M1 Mechanics Mathematical Models; Vectors; Kinematics of a Particle; Dynamics of a Particle; Statics of a Particle.

Entry requirements

This can be a challenging course and students will be expected to have been entered for GCSE on the Highest Tier and gained A*–A.

Future opportunities

A Level Mathematics is a much sought after qualification for entry to a wide variety of full time courses in higher education and many areas of employment such as Medicine, Engineering, Psychology and Environmental Studies. In particular the applied elements of this course are useful for students considering careers involving Business Planning and Project Management or the use of computer software to solve business problems.
