Land-Based Studies (Equine) Level 1 Diploma at Bicton College

Course description

Level 1 Land-Based Studies in Equine is a foundation programme aimed at individuals with a keen interest in the land-based sector and a desire to develop transferable skills to further progression and career ambitions. You’ll have the opportunity to develop your confidence, knowledge and practical skills, alongside more general skills required to gain employment or to continue in education. Functional skills and work experience are integral parts of the course, and there’ll be a good split between time spent in the classroom and practical, outdoor activities with horses.

Course content

■ Develop personal performance
■ Industrial experience in land-based industries
■ Safe and effective working practices in land-based industries
■ Use of transport and assist with maintenance of tools and equipment
■ Contribute to the construction and maintenance of structures and surfaces
■ Plus 3 more equine units
■ Employability and personal development
■ Nationally recognised functional skills qualifications in English, maths and ICT, and the opportunity to retake GCSE English and maths to boost your employability

Entry requirements

1. Springboard – for those with few or no formal qualifications but a strong Interest and willingness to learn.  Your initial assessment must show that you are working towards English Language and maths at Entry Level 3.

2. Level 1 Pathway – for those with GCSE grade D in Maths and English Language who wish to improve their skills in order to move towards a Level 2 courses or apprenticeship.

Offers for both options will be made on the basis of the above and performance at interview.

Future opportunities

Success at Level 1 means you can progress to Level 2 Diploma in Horse Care. You could look for employment, or even start a work-based apprenticeship – and we’ll do whatever we can to help make this happen.
