Veterinary Nursing - Level 3 at Askham Bryan College

Course description

This course combines practical based skills gained on placement with academic theory from taught sessions at College. Students must have secured employment within a veterinary practice or have been offered an apprenticeship position.

Course content

There are a range of internal and external assessments, including assignments, examinations and the RCVS Day One Skills and Competences for Veterinary Nurses. To complete the professional regulatory requirements all students must complete a minimum of 1800 hours in an approved training practice (completed over a specific period). Upon successful completion of all assessment elements students are entitled to apply to join the RCVS Register of Veterinary Nurses and use the postnominal title description of RVN.  

Modules of Study Include:

• Understanding the operational requirements of a veterinary practice • Applied animal welfare, health and husbandry for veterinary nursing • Veterinary nursing for diagnostic imaging • Supporting veterinary nursing operating theatre practice • Preparing for veterinary registration • Understanding the essentials of veterinary nursing care for hospitalised animals

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs to include English Language, Maths and Science grade 4 or above (old GCSE grading C or above). Students must have secured employment within a veterinary practice, or have been offered an apprenticeship position.
