Course description

The practical nature of this course will build your confidence in both your practical and theoretical skills, preparing you for progression and further study in this area.

Students have the opportunity to visit sites to see how work is carried out in the industry as well as benefiting from our extensive purpose-built and fully equipped workshops.

We have a dedicated and qualified teaching team with a wealth of experience and strong links with many joinery and building companies.

Course content

This introductory qualification in carpentry and joinery will provide you with a range of practical skills and knowledge, giving you a sound foundation for a career in the construction industry. This includes the safe use of woodworking hand tools, their sharpening and care, production of basic joining methods and the fitting of everyday ironmongery.

You will cover a diverse range of topics throughout your course. A selection of unit titles is shown below.

  • Carry Out Safe Working Practices in Construction
  • Produce Basic Woodworking Joints
  • Maintain and Use Carpentry and Joinery Hand Tools
  • Prepare and Use Carpentry and Joinery Portable Power Tools

Entry requirements

  • No formal entry qualifications are required
  • All applicants will undergo an initial assessment in literacy and numeracy
  • Places will be offered following a satisfactory interview
  • Applicants will be expected to demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment to the chosen subject area

Assessment

Achievement is by assessment of practical and theory units, a multiple choice online test and practical test.
