Product Design (3D) AS & A Level at Banbury Academy
Students are encouraged to take a broad view of Product Design and develop their capacity to research, design, develop and manufacture marketable products from a range of resistant and compliant materials such as woods, metals, plastics and paper/card. Particular emphasis is on appreciation of the complex relations between designer, materials, manufacture and marketing.
During theory based lessons candidates develop an understanding of the physical and mechanical properties of a broad range of materials and components. This is then examined externally in the summer and is worth 50% of the AS The other 50% of the AS is coursework based and students must submit a design and make project.
Candidates again develop a body of coursework based on a design and make project for a specified client alongside an understanding of the processes and procedures of commercial production and manufacture. This is worth 25% of the entire course. Candidates develop their knowledge of past and present designers and gain a better understanding of Designs place in society. This is externally assessed and is again worth 25% of the entire course.
C Grade or above in GCSE Resistant Materials, Graphic Products or Product Design Preferred C Grade or above in English, Maths and Science
