A-Level (AS/A2) in Further Mathematics at Archbishop Holgate's School

Course description

Enrol on the Further Mathematics A-Level and prepare to have your skills taken to a new level, your understanding deepened until whole areas of mathematics reveal their mysteries, your abilities tested and refined until the most complex problem will open up before your mastery of mathematical techniques and strength of your comprehension.

Course content

The Further Mathematics course explores the relationships between different areas of the subject, revealing the connections between the key topics through a range of teaching and learning styles. At times you will be expected to work independently or problems, and at others you will be sharing your ideas within a group. The A-Level is one of the most respected by industry and academia, and will serve as a fantastic foundation for degrees such as Physics, Mathematics, Computing, Finance, or Engineering. A high level of commitment and determination is required to get the most from the course.

Students study Decision 1 (the maths of algorithms and computer-programming), Further Pure 1 (a significant extension of A-Level Maths into areas such as complex numbers and matricies), and Mechanics 2 (further study of subjects like collisions, moments, and work and power).

In the second year we study Further Pure 2, Decision 2 and Statistics 2. However, the optional modules can be changed with the agreement of the class. What skills will I need and develop?

You will need to be totally confident in your mathematical skills, and be ready to extend your abilities through thorough and focused practice. Your interest in the subject must go beyond the curriculum as it aimed at the commited mathematician. It will require dedication, determination and creativity.
