Course description

Business Studies is an enjoyable topical subject that is highly regarded by employers and higher education institutions alike.  It will help you to understand the nature and purpose of business, the different forms they come in, how businesses operate and the decisions they make in response to internal and external environmental factors. The course looks at businesses as a whole, across four functions Marketing, Finance, HR, and Operations.  It will be invaluable to you when embarking on any professional career.

 

Course content

The course looks at businesses as a whole, across four functions - Marketing, Finance, HR, and Operations - and in the context of their external and competitive environments. It will be invaluable to you when embarking on any professional career.

 

In the second year, students are encouraged to think more ‘strategically’ about the business as a whole. The two year course, therefore, additionally covers the following topics:

· Analysing business performance through financial and non-financial information

· SWOT analysis

· The impact of threats in the business environment, and the extent to which different businesses are affected

· Investment appraisal

· Innovation

· Managing change in a business

· The impact of threats in the business environment, and the extent to which different businesses are affected

· Organisational culture

· Why business strategy fails.

 

Entry requirements

Level 4 in English Language and Level 5 Maths with a minimum GCSE point score of 4.5.

Assessment

The exam papers are a mixture of multiple choice, short answer, data response, essay and case study questions, and real life case studies, based on real organisations are used wherever possible, so that you can apply your skills to real life situations.

 

When you take your exams depends on the course you follow; an AS Level course will be examined at the end of the first year of study, and an A Level course at the end of the second year.

What skills do I need?

  • A genuine interest in current affairs.

 

How will I be taught?
A range of teaching methods are used to encourage active student involvement in your learning. Lessons will involve discussions, group work challenges, exam practice and the use of video and digital resources.

Private Study
As an approximate guideline Year 1 subjects require three to four hours of independent study each; Year 2 subjects four to five hours each and GCSE subjects two hours each.
