Chemistry A Level *FEES PAYABLE* at Northampton High School

Course description

Chemistry is a fascinating and relevant subject that includes green chemistry and sustainability, fuels, the atmosphere, pharmaceuticals and analytical chemistry. It underpins many biological and industrial processes. Studying Chemistry helps you to develop your analytical, problem solving and abstract thinking skills.

A level Chemistry considers the Periodic Table, Bonding and Structure, Organic, Inorganic and Quantitative Chemistry. Chemistry is a practical subject, and practical activities are embedded within the topics studied. This adds to your enjoyment and understanding, together with providing you with the skills needed to study Chemistry at higher levels.

Entry requirements

You are welcome to study A Level Chemistry whether you have taken Science and Additional Science or Biology, Chemistry and Physics at GCSE. A minimum of grade A in Science and Additional Science or a grade A in Separate Science Chemistry are usually required.

We recommend that you also study A Level Mathematics.


100% examination.
The new specifications will no longer have practical examinations or practical assessment. However, there are 12 prescribed practical experiments that all candidates must complete. We have small classes, well-resourced laboratories and excellent technical support so we are confident that this requirement will be successful at the High School.

Future opportunities

Chemistry is a crucial subject for any medical, veterinary science or dentistry degree, and it is beneficial if you are also studying Biology, Physics or Geography

The skills developed are transferable to many other fields, especially those were a methodical approach, numerical skills, abstract processing and problem solving are required.
