Construction Employability Skills Level 1 at Heart of Worcestershire College

Course description

Thinking about a career in construction but not sure where to start? Looking to learn a trade and not sure which direction to take? Are you looking for a course that is practical and hands-on? Then this is the course for you.

The Employability Skills for Construction, Level 1, will introduce you to a number of trades, from carpentry and joinery to brickwork and painting & decorating. You will try your hand at a range of techniques and form a strong basis of skills and knowledge that can be used to help you go onto further education or employment in your chosen industry.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements.  You will need to have an interest in the construction industry and be prepared to undertake an entry assessment during your interview.


You will complete a number of practical tasks in the workshops that will be marked by your tutor.  You will also complete some written theory work in the classroom and study centre.

Future opportunities

If you want to build on your skills and experience you may wish to progress onto a Level 1 Diploma in your chosen area. There are many career paths to choose from in the construction industry, where skills in carpentry, brickwork or painting & decorating will prove useful.

Subjects taught at Alliance House include bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, site carpentry, bench joinery, multi-trade construction operations, plastering, plumbing and painting and decorating. The building is equipped with purpose built working environments allowing you to develop real-life working skills to prepare you for life after college.

      Osprey House

      Located on Albert Street, Osprey House is the College’s central office. It is also home to the College’s higher education and professional courses. Our excellent range of higher education and professional courses provide you with the skills, knowledge and support to progress in your future career.
