Sport & Exercise Science BTEC Level 3 at Priestley College
This innovative course is designed to be a highly specialist work-related qualification that examines how the science of sport can help improve sporting performance and health. You will study, analyse and interpret scientific data and will gain a comprehensive understanding of the physiological, biomechanical, psychological and scientific principles underpinning human performance. If you are looking for a career in the sports industry or planning to progress to University this course is for you!
World of sport and exercise science. They include externally assessed units in:
- Sport and Exercise Physiology
- Functional Anatomy
- Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology
- Nutrition for Sport and Exercise Performance
Other mandatory units include fitness testing, research methods, coaching and performance. Optional units will include sports massage, biomechanics, research project, technology in sport, sports injuries, and sociocultural issues in sport and exercise.
This course is designed to develop your technical skills and personal qualities essential for career development in sport specific employment or higher education. We aim to provide you with an interesting programme that is both intellectually stimulating and challenging. The course will be delivered via tutorials, laboratory work, visits and practical sessions. We will encourage you to work independently and take responsibility for your own learning. You will need to have at least 5 GCSEs grades A* – C or equivalent (including a Science). A BTEC Level 2 completed at school or at Priestley should be at merit standard.
You will be required to undertake 4 external assessments in the above units. During the other mandatory and optional units your tutors will set assignments for you to complete. However, other forms of assessment are used, such as practical observations, presentations, timed assignments under exam conditions, interviews and short tests. You will be expected to complete much of the assignment work in your own time. You will receive plenty of feedback on how you are progressing during the units and how to improve throughout the course. You will be given grades for each unit of Pass, Merit, and Distinction, Distinction* to arrive at an overall grade for this qualification.
Your BTEC final grade is converted directly to UCAS points in the same way as A Level qualifications. Many students choose to continue their studies in higher education. Previous students have gained places on degree courses in Sport Science, Physical Education, Physiotherapy, Sports Injury Management and Rehabilitation, Sports Therapy, Sports Nutrition and Health Promotion and many other sports-related degrees. Other students choose to enter into full-time employment in the sports industry.
Throughout the course you will have the opportunity to undertake a variety of specialised study visits, guest speakers, residential experiences and a range of practical activities, to compliment your programme of study. We also encourage students to gain work-based and volunteering experience in the local community.
