Philosophy and Ethics A Level at St Michael's Church of England High School

Course description

Through studying Philosophy and Ethics, you will develop a capacity to think critically and creatively and to express your ideas with clarity. You will also improve your ability to identify flaws in the logic and reasoning of others. These skills are important in a range of careers including journalism, law, politics, medicine and teaching. If you want to expand your mind and enjoy debating life’s big questions, then this is the subject for you.

Course content

At AS, you will begin by examining the work of Plato and Aristotle and arguments for and against the existence of God. In Ethics you will learn about ethical theories including Kantian Ethics, Natural Law, Christian Ethics (including Situation Ethics) and Utilitarianism, and explore how they can be applied to practical moral issues, such as, War and Peace, Abortion, Euthanasia, Genetic Engineering. At A2, you will consider questions about the Immortality of the Soul, Miracles, the Nature of God and Religious Language. In Ethics you will learn about Virtue Ethics, Free Will, Conscience and Meta-Ethics as well as practical moral topics such as Business Ethics, Environmental Ethics, and Sexual Ethics.

Entry requirements

AS:
Examination – Unit 1 (Philosophy of Religion) AS (50%) 1.5 hours
Examination – Unit 2 (Religious Ethics) AS (50%) 1.5 hours

A2:
Examination – Unit 3 (Philosophy of Religion) A2 (50%) 1.5 hours
Examination – Unit 4 (Religious Ethics) A2 (50%) 1.5 hours

Assessment is via external examination following the OCR specification.

Future opportunities

Degrees in Medicine, Law, Journalism, Publishing or Politics. Philosophy and Ethics is invaluable if you wish to work for charity organisations, and any career requiring high level communication and analytical skills, such as, publishing, journalism, management, the legal profession and teaching.
