Chemistry A level at Havering Sixth Form College

Course description

Chemistry is a fundamental science which has relevancy to everyday life. Chemistry is a key part of current and future technology. It is the Chemist who will lead advances on anti-viral drugs, nanotechnology and renewable fuels alongside developing new materials such as polymers, fertilisers and semi-conductors. You will develop highly sought-after problem solving, analytical and practical skills.

Course content

You can expect to:

  • Learn how materials behave and react at the atomic level and synthesise polymers such as nylon and PVC
  • Understand how medicines and drugs affect the body at the molecular level and synthesise compounds such as aspirin and paracetamol in the laboratory
  • Become familiar with modern analytical techniques such as MRI which have been responsible for major advances in medicine.

Entry requirements

One grade B and four grade Cs at GCSE, C Grade English GCSE, B Grade Maths GCSE, BB Grade Science GCSE, Successful diagnostic test result If not taken with another Science AL or Maths AS, must be taken with Core Maths or BTEC Science.

Compulsory Cost

£10 - A charge for workbooks/revision booklets.

Optional Cost

£23 - Students may choose to buy their own laboratory coats (about £15). Revision guides are available for purchase (£5 - £8). There may also be revision conferences for which there will be associated costs.

Future opportunities

A wide variety of degree courses are possible including chemical engineering, medicine, dentistry and pharmacy. Career opportunities include work in medicine, the public services, management, manufacturing, the service industries and forensic science.
