Beauty Therapy Level 3 NVQ Diploma at Lakes College West Cumbria

Course description

This is a one year full time course for those who enjoy being creative and artistic, working with their hands, and have an interest in a career a Beauty Therapist. The Level 3 Diploma builds on the knowledge and skills developed on the Level 2 Diploma and works towards producing highly professional and skilled beauty therapists. The course is based on the National Occupational Standards for Beauty Therapy and will ensure that you are ‘job ready’ once you have qualified. The course will provide you with the practical skills needed for a career as Beauty Therapist through hands-on interactive classes in the college’s professional beauty salons. The Level 3 is particularly useful if you plan on progressing your career onto the level of Salon Manager or Salon Owner and want your skills to be at the highest ability. Students will develop skills in units such as; Aromatherapy Massage, Stone Therapy Treatments, Body Electrical Treatments and Indian Head Massage. You will have the opportunity to work in the college beauty salon with real clients to practice the latest styles, trends and techniques. Students are also involved in charity fundraising throughout the year, such as offering nail art for Children in Need and community projects such as providing beauty packages for young carers in the local area. Specialist industry professionals regularly come into college to talk to students about different careers and give advice to those wanting to follow a similar career path. Students recently benefitted from an interactive talk from a Movie Make-Up and Special Effects Specialist who has worked on films all over the world with actors such as Brad Pitt. Maths and English will be at the core of your study programme. 

Entry requirements

Level 2 Beauty Therapy at Merit Grade or above with Technical Units and 5 GCSEs A*-C

Financial information

Free to all 16-18 and 19-23 year olds who do not already have a full level 3 qualification e.g. 4 or more AS Levels or 2 A Levels. Advanced Learning Loans are available for further education courses at Level 3, 4 & 5. They operate like higher education loans with deferred payments until you earn over approximately £21, 000 per year. (Information available at -learning-loans/overview) You have the option of taking out a loan or setting up a payment plan with the college that best suits your needs.

Future opportunities

Salon managers plan, organise, direct and co-ordinate the activities and resources of hairdressing salons, health clubs, beauty treatment and similar establishments. The entry level wage is £11k, rising to £33k plus. You will need to be trained up to a level 3 standard to run your own salon and carry out some treatments. It is predicated that more beauticians will be required within the local area in the next few years and wages can be up to £18k per annum. If you progress on to the Level Four Diploma in Management Practice and Advanced Technology in the Hair and Beauty Sector, which focusses on building a business, you will be highly skilled and could work for yourself running a successful salon - or salons! A good wage for a salon manager is £33k.
