Music BTEC Level 2 at Tyne Metropolitan College

Course description

You have a passion and talent for music and want to develop your musical skills. Whether you are a guitarist, drummer, pianist, vocalist, classical musician, DJ or MC this music technology-based course will be right up your street.

Course content

You will gain a realistic insight into the music industry, covering:

  • Studio production and engineering
  • The music business and beatmaking
  • Live performance systems
  • Music composition and performance

This course is delivered in association with the YMCA Recording Studios and benefits from their expertise in music production training. In our new state-of-the-art digital studios, you’ll be in the hub of all things musical and gain expert tuition across the industry, including song writing and ways to enhance your individual style.

You'll have access to our new fully-equipped recording studios, rehearsal rooms and education suite working with industry-standard equipment such as iMacs, Ableton Live, Logic Pro and Protools software within exceptional facilities including fully sound-proofed control rooms, a large vocal booth and one of the largest live rooms in the region. Your musical skills will be assessed as they develop across the year, as you enhance your knowledge and understanding of the music industry and career prospects.

Entry requirements

You will generally be required to have a strong interest in music and at least two GCSEs, with one at Grade C or above.

Your musical experience will also be taken into consideration. Many of our students play some sort of instrument, but this is not essential. Some experience in Music Technology would be useful, but a passion and interest in the subject is a must. An interview is required.

You will be assessed by a series of individual and team practical tasks and assignments.

Future opportunities

This is a great step up towards higher-level courses at the YMCA Recording Studios in music and technology-related subjects.

A career in music could see you working in a record company, as an artist, producer or supporting musician.
