Law A level at Sunderland College

Course description

This course is for people looking to get into the legal profession, become a police officer or simply want to find out more about the role of the justice system.

Course content

This course covers key topics about the English legal system including:

  • Powers of the police force
  • Trying a defendant in court
  • The punishments available
  • The legal profession and the roles of barristers, solicitors and Judges.

In your second year you’ll focus solely on Criminal Law and get an in depth insight into the required elements of specific crimes including murder, manslaughter and non fatal offences.


Entry requirements

You’ll need five GCSEs grade C or above, including English at grade B.


You’ll be taught using active and collaborative learning approaches, as well as individual reading and written assignments.  You will be expected to keep up with current affairs by reading newspapers, watching and listening to the news and looking at relevant electronic resources.

You’ll also have the benefit of guest speakers including the police and magistrates and attend external visits including the courts to help understand the theory of the classroom in a practical context.


Future opportunities

A-level Law can help you progress on to a range of higher education courses at Sunderland College and university including Law. It also opens up career routes in to the police force, solicitor’s offices and the Crown Prosecution Service.
