Business BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate at Kemnal Technology College

Course description

The course is composed of four units. Three units are mandatory and one is an optional unit. Two of these units are externally marked by Edexcel in either a task or exam format. The learning programme covers the following content areas: Business Environments, Finance, Marketing, Human Resources, Accounting and Marketing.

Course content

Year 12

  • Unit 1—Exploring Business
  • Unit 2—Developing a Marketing Campaign

Unit 1 is an internally assessed coursework unit. In this introductory unit, learners study the purposes of different businesses, their structure, the effect of the external environment, and how they need to be dynamic and innovative to survive.

Unit 2 is an externally assessed task. In this unit learners will gain skills relating to marketing and an understanding of how a marketing campaign is developed. This unit will give you an insight into how important marketing is to business. It will enable you to make an informed choice as to whether you want to specialise in marketing in employment, training or higher education.

Year 13

  • Unit 3—Personal and Business Finance
  • Optional Unit— Choice made by teacher (see below)

Unit 3 is an externally assessed unit with a 2-hour exam. This unit will provide a foundation for a number of other finance and business units and will help you to analyse profitability, liquidity and business efficiency. It will give you the knowledge and understanding to manage your personal finances and will provide you with a background to business finance and accounting.

The optional unit will be chosen by the teacher from the following options:

  • Unit 8 — Recruitment and the selection process
  • Unit 14 — Investigating customer service
  • Unit 22 – Market research
  • Unit 27 — Work experience in business

Entry requirements

GCSE APS of 34 5A*-C including English language and Maths.

Future opportunities

Business is a course that gives you a good foundation for a range of careers, for example: human resources; marketing; commercial law; financial services; accountancy; operations management. The Extended Certificate is for learners who are interested in learning about the business sector alongside other fields of study, with a view to progressing to a wide range of higher education courses, not necessarily in business-related subjects.
