Product design – 3D design *FEES PAYABLE* at Sackville School

Course description

Unit 1: materials and components (AS 50%, A2 25%)
A 2 hour written exam testing your understanding of the physical and mechanical properties in a
broad range of materials and components and how they can be manipulated to manufacture
Unit 2: coursework (AS 50%, A2 25%)
A piece of coursework representing approximately 50 hours of supervised time that may take a
number of forms: a single design-and-make project, 2 smaller projects and/or an appropriate
portfolio of work.
Unit 3: written paper (A2 25%)
A 2 hour written exam testing your understanding of:
 classifying materials and identifying, testing and
comparing their application to product manufacture
 the implications of health and safety
 uses of natural resources
 planning production procedures and methods plus
the use of CAM for industrial production
 moral, economic, social and environmental
responsibilities of the designer
Unit 4: project (A2 25%)
This consists of a single, substantial ‘designing and making’ activity representing approximately 60
hours of supervised time.

Entry requirements

For the AS level you will need a grade C or higher in a design technology area and a willingness to carry out individual research related to your chosen projects
