Chemistry A Level at Nelson and Colne College

Course description

Chemistry combines well with other sciences and is a key subject for many degree courses in science, such as Medical, Veterinary or Dental Sciences, Biochemistry or Chemistry.

You will add to your knowledge of atoms, bonds, groups, structure and bonding and relate them to types of reaction. You will also further investigate energy changes and rates of reaction. There will be strong emphasis on applications in the real world, and we will look at important topical issues such as environmental chemistry and recycling.

Later in the course you will develop your knowledge of organic chemistry, including investigating rings and polymers. You will also learn about the exciting field of spectroscopy which is used in Medicine and Forensic Science for blood analysis and solving crimes.

  • Practical skills in chemistry
  • Foundations in chemistry
  • Periodic table and energy
  • Core organic chemistry
  • Physical chemistry and transition elements
  • Organic chemistry and analysis

 

Entry requirements

You will be expected to have two Bs and three Cs in five subject areas at GCSE, to include a minimum of a grade C in English Language as well as Maths and Chemistry or Science (both Core and Additional) at grade B or above.

Assessment

You will be assessed by three external written examinations at the end of the two-year course. Practical work is assessed in each written examination.

Former students have gone to study at some of the UK’s top universities including; the University of Oxford, Imperial College London, King’s College London and the University of Manchester.

Chemistry students are reading a range of degree programmes including Medicine, Optometry, Forensics, Pharmacy, Chemical and Nuclear Engineering or Medicinal and Biological Chemistry to name a few.
