Public Services BTEC Diploma Level 2 at North Kent College

Course description

The one year BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Public Services prepares students for entry into the Public Services such as the Police Service, Fire & Rescue Service, Armed Forces, Prison and Ambulance Services.  Successful completion of the BTEC Level 2 Diploma will allow progress onto Level 3 Subsidiary / Extended Diploma in Public Services.

The course is aimed at 16-19 year olds who have just completed their GCSEs, or are looking to get back into education to study in this expanding and desirable subject area.

Course content

The course consists of 12 units. You will also study functional skills in Maths and English.

Employability Skills in the Public Services

Land Navigation by Map and Compass

Community and Cultural Awareness

Sport and Recreation in the Public Services

The programme is taught through theoretical and practical training sessions supported by functional skills and ICT. Each lesson will provide you with assessment opportunities as you work to achieve your goals and targets. The course may also include a range of day trips, careers talks, visiting speakers and residential trips.


Entry requirements

The course requires successful applicants to have 4 GCSEs grades D or above (English is desirable) or a BTEC Level 1 Diploma in Public Services (or equivalent).  Successful applicants must also demonstrate a willingness to become involved in all aspects of the course including practical sessions.


A wide variety of assessments will be used.  The BTEC programme will use continuous assessment rather than examinations and you will be able to track your performance as you work towards the pass, merit and distinction grades.  You will be encouraged to manage your own assessments and identify where you have met the required standards.  Methods of assessment may include web blogs, presentations, practical demonstrations, posters, reports, leaflets, interviews and discussions. To facilitate assessment, you will be expected to devote personal time for your studies.

Future opportunities

Level 3 course in Public Services. This course will help to improve your application to one of the following services: Police Service, Fire & Rescue Service, Armed Forces, Prison and Ambulance Services.

Further information

During the course, there will be opportunities to achieve other qualifications in addition to your main BTEC programme. These additional qualifications may include functional skills, work skills, first aid, and customer services.
