Geography AS level at Ellesmere Port Catholic High School
The AS consists of 2 units of assessment and may be awarded as a discrete qualification or as the first half of a full A Level.
Unit 1: Physical and Human Geography
Written Examination with structured short and extended questions: 2 hours. (70% of total AS marks)
Core Physical Section:
- Rivers, floods and management.
Optional Physical Topics:
- 1 of Cold Environments
- Coastal Environments
- Hot Desert Environments
Core Human Section:
- Population Change
Optional Human Topics:
- 1 of Food Supply Issues
- Energy Issues
- Health Issues
Unit 2: Geographical Skills
Written Examination with structured skills and and fieldwork questions: 1 hour. (30% of total AS marks)
A range of skills - investigative, cartogrqaphic, graphical, ICT, and statistical will be covered through Unit 1 and via fieldwork.
These will be assessed with reference to unseen resources and personal fieldwork.
You will need a GCSE grade 'C' or above. Candidates who have not studied Geography at GCSE will also be considered.
Students should also be well motivated and have a genuine interest in the subject.
There may be a cost involved in fieldwork.
Geography is a subject with one of the highest rates of graduate employment, highly valued by employers for its combination of knowledge with competence in the key skills.
Geographers find work in travel and tourism, teaching, landscape, business planning and research and a variety of environmental roles.
