Geography AS & A Level at Christ The King Catholic High School and Sixth Form Centre

Course description

Geography is an exciting and dynamic subject which addresses the key ideas and debates in our world today. 

Our A Level course follows the Edexcel specification which offers a contemporary issues-based approach. The specification content gives students the opportunity to develop an in-depth understanding of physical and human geography, the complexity of people - environment relationships and to become critical and reflective learners. 

Course content

The Edexcel specification has four equally weighted areas of study which are:

  • Dynamic Landscapes - Tectonic Processes & Hazards; Coastal Landscapes & Change
  • Dynamic Places - Globalisation Regenerating Places
  • Physical Systems & Sustainability - Water Cycle & Water Resources; Carbon Cycle & Energy Security
  • Human Systems & geopolitics - Superpowers; Global Development & Connections

Students will also develop and use a variety of fieldwork and enquiry skills and must undertake a minimum of four fieldwork for A Level.

Assessment

The A Level consists of three externally examined papers and one coursework component. The course is fully linear and students will take the examinations at the end of Year 13.

Paper 1: 30%
2 hours and 15 minutes
Tectonic Processes & Hazards, Coastal Landscapes, Water Cycle & Resources, Carbon Cycle & Energy

Paper 2: 30%
2 hours and 15 minutes
Globalisation, Regenerating Places, Superpowers, Global Development & Connections

Paper 3: 20%
2 hours and 15 minutes
Synoptic Issues Analysis

Coursework: 20%
Written report of 3000-4000 words
Independent Investigation -internally assessed and externally moderated
 

Future opportunities

Geography is a very broad based subject which combines well with either art & humanities subjects or science subjects and develops a range of transferable skills. Geography is also regarded as a 'facilitating subject' for entry onto a wide range of degree courses.

Geography graduates are employed in all sectors including commerce, management, civil service, leisure and education.
