Progress to Advanced at NewVIc

Course description

If you already have three GCSEs, including English Language, at grades 9-5, and would like to study a wider range of subjects in order to develop the skills and knowledge needed for study at advanced level (Level 3) then this course is ideal for you.

If you have not studied GCSEs previously this course may still be suitable for you if your English Level indicates that you can cope with its demands.

Course content

You will choose 4* subjects from the following list:

  • GCSE Religious Studies
  • GCSE Film Studies
  • GCSE Business Studies
  • GCSE Science

*If you have not achieved a C grade pass in Maths then you will be required to study this subject as one of your 4 GCSEs.

Entry requirements

Three GCSEs at grades A*-C, including grade 9-5 in English Language, as well as a report from your previous school detailing your attendance, punctuality and commitment to study.


During the course you will be assessed by coursework and examinations.

Future opportunities

Successful students who pass all of their subjects at grades A*-C (or 9-5 for English Language and Mathematics) and have excellent attendance will have the opportunity to progress to an advanced level programme of study. A variety of study options will be open to you, including A-level or advanced vocational programmes.

    • Newham Sixth Form College (NewVIc) is London's largest sixth form college, offering full-time courses for 16 to 19-year-olds. NewVIc offers over 50 A Level subjects, 31 level 2 and 3 vocational programmes, as well as foundation, entry level and ESOL programmes.
