Building Maintenance Multi-Trade Repair & Refurbishment Intermediate Apprenticeship Level 2 at PETROC

Course description

This is a flexible apprenticeship designed to cater for the maintenance and general building industry. This apprenticeship provides a broad traineeship across several trades in college, alongside a specialism in two trades in the workplace. There is a strong emphasis on developing good hand skills using a wide range of hand and power tools for each trade area.

Course content

Level 2 Diploma in Maintenance Operations.
At college you will complete core units and five skills units. These are:

  • Health, safety and welfare in construction 
  • Principles of building construction, information and communication
  • Carry out small-scale building repairs
  • Carry out small-scale painting and decorating repairs
  • Carry out small-scale plastering repairs
  • Carry out small-scale plumbing repairs
  • Carry out carpentry repairs


Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Building Maintenance Multi-Trade Repair and Refurbishment Operations .
On site you will cover assessments on specified tasks that are discussed and planned with your work-based assessor in co-ordination with your employer. You will need to complete mandatory units and can select two of the following units:

  • Plastering
  • Painting
  • Non Structural Carpentry
  • Slating and Tiling
  • Wallpapering
  • Repairing Eaves and Verge Finishes
  • Repairing Masonry Structures
  • Repairing Stonemasonry Structures
  • Repairing Gates, Posts and Fences
  • Tiling
  • Floor screeds

There are additional qualifications which must be achieved as part of the apprenticeship package which are Employer Rights & Responsibilities and Functional Skills Level 2. 

Entry requirements

Five GCSE's at D or above, including English & Maths 

Candidates will undertake an interview prior to enrolment. Candidates should have an aptitude for practical skills and must be employed within the industry by a construction maintenance company before the start of the apprenticeship.

Assessment

You will receive support and 12 weekly reviews with your Placement Officer and regular assessment in the workplace for your NVQ. There are practical assessments and a theory test at the end of each Diploma unit.

On completion candidates may progress onto Level 3 supervisory/management qualifications or a Foundation Degree.

Q. Does the college find me an employer?
A. No, you are responsible for finding your own work placement. We can help by following up on leads you may have and discussing apprenticeship requirements with a prospective employer, as well as checking them for suitability.

Q. Should my employer pay me while I am at college?
A. Yes, you will be paid for the time you are at college irrespective of whether you attend on a block or day release basis.
