A Level French at Chiltern Hills Academy

Course description

Year 1 AS Level

This is initially a one year course leading to an AS qualification, with the possibility of continuing for a second year to complete the full A level qualification. The specification for the course from AQA is presented below. The AS course consists of two units of assessment, the content of which is based on the following four topics:

Media - Television/Advertising/Communication technology

Popular culture - Cinema/Music/Fashion and trends

Healthy living/lifestyle - Sport and Exercise/Health and well-being/Holidays

Family/relationships - Relationships within the family/Friendships/Marriage and partnerships

Year 2 A2 Level

The full A Level qualification is made up of the AS units plus two more units which cover the following three topics, plus a further two selected from a choice of five cultural topics.

Environment - Pollution/Energy/Protecting the planet

Multicultural Society - Immigration/Integration/Racism

Contemporary Social Issues - Wealth and Poverty/Law and Order/Impact of scientific and technological progress

Plus two from cultural topics (from a French speaking community)

Entry requirements

In order to study this subject, students are required to have at least a C grade and preferably a B grade in GCSE French. Those students who attend extra lessons in Year 11 and are entered for the higher tier paper at GCSE will have a much more solid foundation upon which to base further studies in this subject. An ability to learn and retain vocabulary and grammatical concepts is essential. You will be expected to spend time consolidating your grammatical knowledge and background reading about France before the course commences.
