Art, Craft and Design A Level at Samuel Ryder Academy

Course description

A level Art, Craft and Design currently follow the AQA exam board specification. The A-Level course consists of four units with each being worth 25% of the final assessment. Students are given the opportunity to select and develop a theme of their choosing for Unit 3 in year 13. Students develop skills with drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, critical analysis and evaluation.

A-Level Art & Design enables students to learn new skills and develop their individual style as an artist. They will be encouraged to engage creatively with themes and ideas and to consider how other artists have done the same. Students will aim to develop skills as a visual communicator in a world that places increasing importance on visual awareness and understanding. Students will be provided with a studio space to continue working in beyond lesson times. Students will further develop their drawing skills and work with a variety of processes including painting, printmaking, sculpture depending on personal preferences.

Entry requirements

Grade C or above at GCSE Art and Design.

A genuine interest in visual arts and other cultures.  Enthusiasm, determination, initiative and an ability to work independently.

Students who have a GCSE grade C or above in Design and Technology will have an additional advantage.

To continue onto the A2 course a D grade or above at AS is required.
